Writing with the Moon: The Twelve Signs
An Introduction
Ever present yet always changing. A beacon, guide, and timekeeper. An eternal object of our attention and affection. An inspiration as well as a destination. A companion on our night-time journeys, it cradles our hopes, dreams, and wishes. These are just some of the ways that we know the Moon.
Through astrology, we also understand it as a symbol of maternal consciousness. The Moon gives us language for how we tend and care, provide and protect, nourish and nurture. In our personal birth charts, our Moon’s placement can reveal our emotional landscape—what we need, what sustains us, and where we find belonging.
It takes the Moon about four weeks to move through the zodiac, spending two-plus days in each sign. As it reflects the emotional tone of the moment, the Moon’s daily sign placement offers a way to check in—with ourselves and the world around us—and align with the collective mood.
Of the many ways astrology can support a creative practice, working with the Moon is one of the most accessible. For example, certain Moon signs may be especially supportive for brainstorming, refining details, seeing the big picture, gathering feedback, or any number of other creative activities. When we write with the Moon’s rhythms in mind, we may find clearer focus, greater ease, and more spaciousness in our process. Aligning our activities with the energy of the day can spark new ideas and soften resistance.
That’s why I’m devoting the next series of Butterflyhaikus articles to this practice.
Over the coming weeks, you’ll find four short articles, each exploring the Moon’s movement through three zodiac signs:
Aries / Taurus / Gemini
Cancer / Leo / Virgo
Libra / Scorpio / Sagittarius
Capricorn / Aquarius / Pisces
Each article will include:
A brief overview of each sign’s invitations
Suggested activities to weave into your writing practice
A list of dates for when the Moon is in those signs through the remainder of 2025
I’ll publish each article a day or so before the Moon enters the first sign in that group, so you’ll have time to prepare, reflect, or simply get curious.
The first article—Aries, Taurus, and Gemini—will arrive on August 11, just before the Moon enters Aries on August 12.
I hope this series brings a deeper sense of rhythm, inspiration, and creativity to your writing life.
xxStephanie
